The United States of America is on a slow, miserable walk towards an authoritarian type of government where freedom of speech and the expression of ideas and principles, not in line with the regime’s own, is greatly discouraged.
The fact that this astonishing restructuring of the United States political system is being undertaken by a chief executive who is unintelligent, inarticulate, totally without personal morals, and who has no sense of self-awareness or shame, is something anthropologists of the far future, will study to exhaustion.
But what about the right now?
The normalization of bad behavior, immorality and illegal acts by the current POTUS and his administration is happening right under the noses of what was thought to be one of the most powerful and respected fourth estates on planet Earth.
If only…
The free press has failed this country. Donald J. Trump should have never been elected in 2016, as he was not qualified or fit to be president then, and he is not qualified to sit in the Oval Office now, even as he serves a 2nd term.
America’s vaunted press – especially the so-called mainstream media – was much more interested in ratings, and eyeballs on television screens eager to gawk at the latest controversy involving the boisterous former reality TV show host, than reporting the ugly truth that Trump was woefully unqualified, and undeserving to set foot in the White House.
The “grab ’em by the pussy” interview audio that was leaked in 2016, is just one example of a scandalous incident that should have killed Trump’s presidential candidacy outright, but it did not.
That was the moment, the singular moment that should have saved America from a man who is turning out to be a literal monster. Trump was treated very differently than other candidates in the public eye, at that time, and this staggering normalization of Trump, as untouchable, a public figure covered in Teflon, is still happening to this very day.
This is why, it is especially galling to watch some of the most highly-regarded news personalities in America, sit down in their vaunted Sunday chairs, again, and again, and report on acts undertaken by a Republican presidency, that is operating outside of the law, and with a remarkable callousness, as if the Trump administration is just like any other.
Clearly, what is happening in America right now, is something that has never been seen before, and is an exceedingly dangerous threat to our 200-year-old democracy. This country of fifty unified states, has had a discouraging assortment of racists, religious bigots, misogynists and white supremacists sitting in the Oval Office.
America has never had a man ensconced in that office, who once attempted a coup, when he was required to leave, and who is now busying himself destroying America’s reputation and standing around the world, while he lambastes the federal judiciary, whenever there are rulings that interfere with the bizarre and un-American goals of his administration. Likewise, he viciously insults the intelligence of
legislators of the opposition party, in a manner that has all kinds of racial overtones, whenever a black female is on the receiving end of his criticism.
In general, Donald Trump behaves, as if he can get away with anything.
He has yet to be proven wrong, on that one count.
Is it too much to ask the mainstream press to take the gloves off their delicate little hands and treat this imbecile with the disrespect he deserves. The way he should have been criticized, humiliated, and forced to withdraw from the presidential race in 2016, for being basically, a jerk
America’s freedom hangs in the balance. This man has shown us who he is. The time for a genuinely tough sit down some Sunday morning is now, not in two or three years when there might be tough-looking men in uniform, glaring at the interviewer, and reminding the host with the meanness in their eyes, that some questions are not allowed and could get you in trouble. – So be careful.
Yes. It can happen here.
