A strange event occurred in Washington, D.C. last week. City workers began dismantling Black Lives Matter Plaza. The admittedly awkward and poorly designed monument to the summer of 2020 when the world railed against the video-recorded, in broad daylight murder, of a black motorist by a demented cop in Minneapolis, Minnesota
A shocking event that sparked outrage world wide.
That’s what Black Lives Matter Plaza was all about. It wasn’t built to memorialize an organization or a political movement. The yellow painted pavement, if you will, was about the idea that people of color have the right to speak out forcefully when injustices occur that are beyond the pale.
The callous, cold-blooded, strangulation murder of George Floyd by a uniformed police officer, was such an outrage.
Planet Earth seemed to agree with that assessment.
But not so fast. Right? We won’t waste time with MAGA. Anything that POC are concerned about – MAGA is immediately against. That’s what Trumpism is and has proven to be. The suppression of the will, goals and aspirations of persons of color all across the United States of America.
The disassembly of Black Lives Matter Plaza will cost the District of Columbia government upwards of $600,000 dollars, published estimates suggest.
Perhaps, that is why Muriel Bowser, the mayor of DC, engaged in this act of supplication to power-wielding Republicans on Capitol Hill, with little objection, and even less fight.
It is likely, the view from her office, and that of other elected officials in the DC government, is that there are angry wolves, snarling outside the gates of the real city, who despise the rapidly gentrifying District of Columbia. A community populated by hundreds of thousands of WOKE elite liberals of all ethnicities, who despise the likes of Donald J. Trump and everything he represents
It’s all really very simple. The federal government is currently in the hands of people who are mad, as in crazy in the head, mad, and this is the reality that the District of Columbia must confront. Washington DC was once politically controlled by a congressionally appointed panel of bigoted old white men, and now the District’s current arrangement, colloquially known, as Home Rule, where DC is self-governing, could be endangered by Trump’s simple-minded minions – and that is no joke.
The city of Washington DC listens when the current Dear Leader wannabe in the White House talks about placing the left-leaning city back under the complete control of the federal government.
There is also the matter of a storied professional football franchise that would like to return to the city that holds part of its name. Washington wants its football team back and wants the games played within city limits. And not in nearby Maryland, which is well, Maryland. Not the District.
Many details are in the balance right now, concerning the re-use of the land the old dilapidated, rust- speckled, RFK Stadium still stands on.
Professional football is the nation’s most popular sport by a wide margin. The city stands to lose big time, if in the coming months and years, the political and financial obstacles cannot be sorted out, and the professional football team is prevented from returning to DC proper.
There is zero percent chance congressional Republicans, along with the spiteful, convicted felon holding court at the White House, will allow that to easily happen – when there is a perfect opportunity to stand in the way of the District of Columbia’s cursed, liberal government.
So why antagonize?
The yellow-painted block letters on the street across from Lafayette Park, that commemorated the horrible year of George Floyd’s tragic murder and the worldwide protests that followed, will soon be gone. The mayor held her tongue and will take a political hit for that, and maybe, just maybe, the city can have a chance to host a professional football team again, in a gleaming new stadium filled with thousands of screaming fans.
Or perhaps the real city, of Washington DC, which is full of normal everyday Americans, who are just going on about their daily lives, can have a chance to breathe free and be left alone by the ideologically opposite TrumpWorld.
This is the living hell that the spineless Republican party and the man without morals, at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, have created for the capital city of the United States of America.
Damn shame.
