It has been a few weeks now since President Donald Trump’s latest “throw shit at the wall” and see what sticks idea about reopening the federal prison on the island of Alcatraz in San Francisco Bay, California was announced, and just like most of his other insane ideas, this one has found little traction or enthusiasm, even amongst his most devoted Republican heart-throbs.
Alcatraz was officially closed in March 1963, because the cost of maintenance of an isolated island prison complex had become prohibitive, and just the simple affordability of shipping food and department of corrections personnel, to and from the island everyday was out-of-bounds expensive. And, of course, with the advent of modern surveillance technology, the necessity of housing dangerous, incorrigible prisoners on an island setting to prevent them from escaping, also was a waste of precious governmental resources that could be better utilized elsewhere.
Well, so much for the logic of dumping prisoners or housing illegal immigrants on cold, windy Alcatraz Island. A federal prison far from shore, full of evil-eyed men no decent, law-abiding person would ever want to walk past in an alley late at night may be the stuff, great Hollywood films require for success.
But, this fantasy of Donald Trump’s is likely to remain just that.
Time will tell.
